The athletics program is designed to teach a range of physical education fundamentals and to promote the idea that a lifelong commitment to physical fitness is essential for a healthy mind and body. PE classes are offered every day at CDS. The curriculum accommodates each age level, and it utilizes on-site facilities, which include a full tennis court, fitness center, and a fitness trail for circuit training.
Early Childhood Division (PS-1st)
The early childhood athletic program encourages fair play and team work through a variety of games that involve “listening and following” exercises, as well as early fundamentals for throwing, catching, running, stretching, and motor skills. The emphasis is on physical activities that promote social development and fun.
Elementary Division (2nd-4th)
As skills progress, our elementary students move on to exercises that promote gross motor development, technique, and intermediate fundamentals. The games increase in complexity as the children learn the basics of basketball, kickball, soccer, tennis and gymnastics.
Middle School Division (5th-8th)
In Middle School our students begin the “Fitness for Life” and “Presidential Fitness” programs. Their curriculum involves core and circuit training, increasing cardio strength and endurance, and more advanced team play and skill acquisition. It is expected that our students will graduate from Chatham Day School with a variety of experiences and skills that they will be able to use no matter what particular sport(s) might interest them in secondary school and beyond.
